VI.2.19 Pompeii. May 2011.  Entrance doorway, looking west.

According to Fiorelli, next to the city wall was the last house in Vicolo di Modesto.

In the Samnite era it would have had noble decoration on its walls, but then it was transformed into an inn (stabulum), with large stables (scuderia), with many rustic rooms, dormitories or hay-lofts above them.

There was an uncovered area, in the back of which was a passageway that would have been the fauces/corridor from which one would have reached the garden area; which seems to have been used in the last times, together with the rustic rooms built around its interior, as an inn or a hostel.

VI.2.18 was described as the rear exit of the building with the main entrance on the eastern vicolo (that is VI.2.19 on Vicolo di Modesto)

According to Garcia y Garcia, two bombs fell here that caused the grave ruin and abandonment of the area.

The prothyron was destroyed, two rooms to the south of it, and a part of the atrium.

The north perimeter wall was also destroyed for a large area of 4 x 4m.

The Corinthian capital in the centre, was described as “In a house entry South of the Tower” and is from VI.2.18/19.

On the right, the floor decoration is from VI.2.17.

On the left, the phallic symbol, and drawing “on a wall” may be from VI.2.24.
